B-29 Education Area
Welcome to the Education area! This page contains activities kids can do
online, like the virtual tour of a B-29. There are also things to be printed
out and done on your own, including a crossword puzzle, word search, and
coloring sheet. And there are activities teachers can use with an entire class,
such as the Home Front game for bartering rationed goods, as well as a booklist
of additional resources. If you have questions about these activities contact
Smoky Hills Public Television's Educational Services department.
For a great example of how to conduct a World War II era research project with your students, we have found a link to share with you. The website, Kids View of World War II may provide inspiration for your class. It was created by a group of fifth-grade students in Spring Hill, Kansas.

The crew of a B-29 was made up of 11 men. The Aircraft Commander (sometimes
termed the Command Pilot), Pilot (sometimes termed the Co-Pilot), Bombardier,
Navigator, Flight Engineer, and Radio Operator were located in the forward
pressurized cabin. They were connected by a 34in. diameter tube to the
mid-fuselage pressurized area, where the Radar Operator, Central Fire Control
Gunner, Left Side Gunner, and Right Side Gunner were located. The tail gunner,
in his own completely separated pressurized turret, was in the rear. The
Aircraft Commander, Pilot, Bombardier, Navigator and Flight Engineer were all
officers, the remainder enlisted men, although the post of Flight Engineer was
gradually opened to suitable qualified enlisted men as World War II progressed.
